About Us
Old School Joinery is a custom cabinet shop located near Charlotte, North Carolina. We have been in business since 1994, using both traditional and newer methods of cabinet construction. We specialize in custom casework for the residential building industry. Our work includes kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, home office cabinets, home libraries, and any kind of built-in for your home. We use both domestic and imported hardwoods in our cabinetry.
All businesses have a startup story to show that businesses are made up of people. This is our story:
Jeff and Ann Weir moved to Charlotte in 1983 to be part of a mission group that specialized in translation and literacy work. After a few years in North Carolina, they moved to the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to work with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL). There Jeff managed the SIL Joinery (the word “joinery” is a British term used to describe the joining of wood) and taught cabinetmaking skills to PNG nationals. After 5 years, he and his family returned to the U.S. and transitioned out of mission work.
In 1994, the Weirs opened their first cabinet shop in an old school building in Mineral Springs, NC. Continuing the legacy of their time in PNG, “Old School Joinery” came to be. The business is currently located south of Charlotte in Waxhaw, NC. They have remained a small operation, having no more than 4 cabinetmakers in the shop. This has allowed Jeff to serve his clients directly while also giving him the opportunity to continue short term mission trips. Jeff has completed a number of volunteer cabinetmaking projects both in the US and overseas for mission groups and missionaries. His most recent overseas jobs have been in Melbourne, Australia (2018), and in Durban, South Africa (2019). He has also made six trips back to Papua New Guinea over the past 20 years.
