The Workshop
My instructor once told me, "A good project starts with a good plan." That was more than 40 years ago. I have found that advice to be ever so true.
The first step of making a good plan is meeting with the client to determine their specific needs. After designing and drawing the project with as many details as possible with the available information, the drawings are reviewed with the client. If any changes are desired, I’ll apply them to the drawings until they meet the client’s approval.
The next phase of the project is construction. The parts are cut to size and sanded, ready to assemble. With cabinet boxes assembled, trim pieces are then installed on the boxes as needed. After this I check that all parts (doors, drawers, shelves, specialty parts) fit properly before going into the finishing process.
The finishing process is staining, painting, or sealing, and sanding the cabinets and parts between each coat. Once all the finishes have been applied, the cabinets are up fitted by installing the doors, drawers, the backs of the cabinets, specialty hardware, knobs, pulls, etc. When the shop work is completed, we install the cabinets on site and do the final trim out and inspection.
